Oh! Uganda lamentations

The currency of paper, fuel or electricity!

The recent trends in Uganda make me want to run away and become an American, South African or at least Tanzanian! All arguments presented by powers that be suddenly sound very empty and weak, while the business community walks around hopelessly, many still do not know the magnitude of the problem, a man walks into the bank with me and quietly sits there waiting – seemingly deciding which transactions to honor now and how much to take for himself and the family.

NO wrong! He is here to close the business account or else experience escalating bank charges that he can't afford any more

So is it a currency problem, is it that money went down the hole and was not monitored, what happened, is it a global trend? … I think I am not very patriotic right now, I see the pain that the community is facing in the eyes of the leaders; I see the leaders take defensive positions instead of proactive action on criticism – what happened to listening to constructive critics?

Today I wish my currency was the dollar because it offers a semblance of stability and predictability, our experts – some of them say we can take temporary measures and cut taxes, others say we can't - depending on which side your bread is buttered from. Mine is still not buttered, and so are many others bread but they wake up every morning and go to work with the hope of a better tomorrow!

The experts continue to debate and complicate simple economic theories to buy time but the fact is we are falling apart :-(

An innocent soul wakes up and its dark, there are no lights and it will be like that for the rest of the day, so s/he resorts to wash and wear, no breakfast, turning into the fuel station s/he is informed that the fuel price was upped once again, s/he says well pump whatever my money can buy. Getting to the office, the first letter is an invoice – well rent has not been increased but apparently it has increased - guess why, well the non patriotic land lord was sharp enough to realize that the shilling was not to be trusted!

So how do I make more, how do I keep up! Hey how do I keep my costs low and revenues good! How do I keep my customers, well – I feel let down! I hear rumors of no food reserves, no fuel reserves, no money reserves; no nothing isn’t it a crisis or is it what??? - I am lost in thought

Finally some electricity is back 12 hours later and the leaders are still debating what measures to take as the business community and the consumers begin to slow down like the wind that has traveled along distance ...

There is no denying that electricity will affect any other thing, there is no denying that fuel will affect any other thing, there is no denying that the shilling will affect any other thing and there is no denying there is no denying let’s stop denying!!! Even water is pumped using electricity!

So are we getting better ...
